OHMYGOSSIP — Shelley King thinks women are the “driving force” behind ‘Coronation Street’s success.
The 65-year-old actress – who plays Yasmeen Nazir on the ITV soap – was drawn to the show after watching a number of strong female characters take the spotlight.
Shelley – who joined the soap after spending years working in the theatre business – told Metro.co.uk: “You have females grow as actors from their birth until now. The power of women – Elsie Turner, Ena Sharples, Bet Lynch – you name em, they’re huge characters and they’re wonderful.
“The women lead the storylines – of course the men are there and are important – we need each other. But it’s the women who are the driving force of the show.
“There are also really important and extraordinary storylines like male suicide and male rape that we have started to explore – to show that men can be just as equally impacted by emotions. Why do we explore them? It’s another way the equality of things – men can be equally vulnerable and emotionally damaged by these things. ‘Coronation Street’ explores without gender bias and that’s wonderful, I think.”
Shelley is thrilled that she was able to take on the role of a strong woman after her character struggled with domestic abuse.
The actress reflected: “She certainly has made a journey.
“I have said to you before, there is a commonality in the men and women who are perpetrators of abuse – they attract themselves to people who show strength. That is Yasmeen – she has battled all her life, she has kept going and she is a strong woman.
“To explore under the parapet of a strong woman is a fantastic thing.”
