OHMYGOSSIP — Jimmy Greaves has paid tribute to his late co-star Ian St John, admitting he will miss him “forever”.
The 81-year-old former footballer – who suffered a stroke in 2015 – has remembered his former ‘Saint and Greavsie’ co-host after Ian passed away “peacefully” aged 82 this week following a long illness.
Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Jimmy – who struggles to speak – said: “I will miss my mate forever.”
Jimmy’s son, Danny, admitted his father is “very sad” about the passing of his friend, who he presented the football show with during the 1980s and early 1990s.
He told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “I went round to break the news to Dad.
“He broke down and cried when I told him and he’s very, very sad.
“We’re all very sad as a family. Unfortunately, like Dad, Ian has been unwell for a little while now but it’s still a very sad day when the news finally comes through that one of Dad’s big pals has passed away.
“My fondest memory is of the fact that the two of them were such good friends. The job they did wasn’t a job to either of them and it worked because it was two friends who came together, two ex-football colleagues, ex-players, who understood the game and just generally had fun and a laugh.
“It wasn’t work for them. They turned up on a Saturday afternoon to talk about the game they both loved and fell about laughing for a couple of hours. That’s the underlying memory.”
Former Liverpool footballer Ian’s family confirmed yesterday (02.03.21) he had passed away.
They said in a statement: “It is with a heavy heart that we have to inform you that after a long illness we have lost a husband, father and grandfather.
“He passed away peacefully with his family at his bedside.
“We would like to thank all the staff at Arrowe Park Hospital for their hard work and dedication during these very difficult times.
“The family would be grateful for privacy at this extremely sad time.”
The pair co-hosted ‘Saint and Greavsie’ from 1985 to 1992, and during which they discussed the day’s football stories.
Previously, St John and Greaves had collaborated on Saturday lunchtime show ‘On the Ball’, which ran as part of ITV’s ‘World of Sport’, which came to an end in 1985.
