OHMYGOSSIP — Jed Mercurio has hinted he will write a coronavirus-themed drama.
The acclaimed writer – who created shows including ‘Line of Duty’ and ‘Bodyguard’ – has admitted the global health crisis would be a prime candidate for a medical series, although he isn’t sure what format such a show would take.
Asked if he’d write a drama about the pandemic, he told ‘Inside Culture With Mary Beard’: “It feels now that if I were to write about medicine it probably would be directly related to the pandemic, because I think that drama should address that.
“Quite what canvas that should be in, I don’t know.”
Jed has been busy working on series six of ‘Line of Duty’ – which was forced to close production when coronavirus first hit the UK – and though the pandemic and social distancing measures aren’t directly referenced in the new episodes, he promised there are references which “sharp-eyed viewers” will notice.
He teased: “It is shot so that the pandemic is invisible… what we did decide to do was we snuck in a few allegorical points in relation to the current situation, so sharp-eyed viewers should look out for those.”
Despite the huge success of 2018’s thriller ‘Bodyguard’, Jed wants to stay away from political sagas in the future because its a fast-changing world.
He said: “I think now if you were to set something in the world of politics, that the issue is that it’s changing very fast, and it does feel like we’re heading in a direction that it’s quite hard for drama to make seem authentic.”
‘Inside Culture With Mary Beard’ in conversation with Jed Mercurio airs on BBC2 on Thursday (25.02.21) evening.
