OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Toast of Tinseltown’ has been commissioned by the BBC.
Matt Berry will reprise the role of Steven Toast – his eccentric and arrogant actor previously seen in three seasons of ‘Toast of London’ on Channel 4 – in the upcoming spin-off which sees his character move to Hollywood with the goal of becoming a movie star.
The 46-year-old actor – who also co-created and wrote the series with Arthur Mathews – said: “I couldn’t be more thrilled to not only be working with Arthur and the rest of the Toast family again, but to also be taking the show to the BBC which I know Toast himself would very much approve.”
Along with the move to the Beeb, the show will continue with six new half-hour episodes set to be filmed later this year with a mix of new and returning cast members for the run on BBC One and iPlayer.
The first three series originally aired on C4 between 2013 and 2015, and Arthur was delighted to be working on more “after a long gap”.
He added: “It was a thrill to be writing Toast again after a long gap. Hollywood is a brave new world for Toast. There will be triumphs and tribulations (but mostly tribulations – and indeed humiliations).”
Broadcast and casting details are still to be announced, but the BBC has hailed the returning character as one of the greats alongside the likes of Alan Partridge and David Brent.
Shane Allen – the Beeb’s controller of comedy commissioning – said: “This sitcom is one of the stand-out comedy gems of the last decade. His name belongs in the pantheon of celebrated British comedy character buffoons – Partridge, Brent and Toast.”
And Ben Farrell – Chief Creative Officer at production company Objective Fiction – commented: “I’m thrilled to be working with wiip and the BBC to bring Toast’s adventures to the ultimate actor’s playground – Hollywood!”
