OHMYGOSSIP — Dr. Alex George has been appointed as a Youth Mental Health Ambassador by the Prime Minister.
Boris Johnson has enlisted the help of the A&E doctor – who tragically lost his 19-year-old brother Llŷr to suicide last year – to advise the government and raise the profile of mental health education and wellbeing in schools.
Alex – who shot to fame on ‘Love Island’ in 2018 – said: “The last year has been unimaginably difficult for all of us, but particularly for young people who have sacrificed so much.
“I am honoured to be appointed for this role where I’ll be working closely with the government to make mental health an absolute priority and hope to have a positive impact on the lives of young people and their education for good.
“Right now young people need a voice in government, and I hope that through this role I can advocate for meaningful change in this area.”
Alex will use his medical expertise and personal experience to champion the government’s work on children’s mental health and shape policy on improving support for young people in schools, colleges and universities.
He will also sit on the new Mental Health in Education Action Group, which will look at how young people are supported as they return to school and university after a difficult year.
Boris added: “Children and young people have heroically adapted to save lives and protect our NHS.
“This has understandably had a huge impact on their mental health, so I want to shine a spotlight on this vital issue ahead of their return to school.
“I’m delighted that Dr. Alex George will be working with us as we do everything in our power to improve people’s mental wellbeing.”
Alex – who will start the unpaid role immediately, working with the Department for Education – is looking forward to making some positive changes.
Speaking on ‘Lorraine’ today (03.02.21), he said: “Number 10 directly reached out and said, ‘We’ve seen the campaign and we’d like to talk further.’
“I got the call last week saying the Prime Minister would like to see you and speak with you.
“I’m so honoured to have this opportunity where I feel like I might be able to make some change.
“I think of “Llŷr every morning, I really do.”
Alex’s mum Jane added: “You’ve been doing absolutely amazing.
“Llŷr, looking down, will be so, so proud of what you’re doing.”
