OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Call The Midwife’ is “running out” of diseases to use in storylines.
The popular BBC period drama’s upcoming 10th seasonis to be set in 1966, when vaccination programmes had made significant progress eradicating many illnesses.
Stephen McGann – who plays Dr. Turner on the show – told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “We are actually having a problem on ‘Call the Midwife’, because we’re running out of these old diseases we started with, because we’re being vaccinated.”
However, the hit drama’s writer Heidi Thomas – who urged people to get vaccinated because “the show reminds us what things used to be like” – insisted she is finding “new stories”.
She explained: “There will always be something new for example but polio and TB are sort of on the run.
“I have to look for new stories as we can’t do stories really about polio anymore. By 1967, it had been eradicated.
“So I am looking forward to the way in which medicine changes and we just aren’t running out of material yet I think.”
The 10th season will air on BBC One later this year rather than its usual January slot, because filming was delayed for five months during the pandemic.
Furthermore, the series has been reduced from eight episodes to seven as a knock-on effect.
However, in good news for fans, ‘Call the Midwife’ has been recommissioned for an 11th run, and Heidi previously revealed how valuable it is being able to plan for the future.
She explained: “It is actually lovely to have some certainty, because I feel ‘Call the Midwife’ is fuelled by character and character development.”
Despite the series 10 delay, ‘Call the Midwife’ returned for its annual Christmas special last month after a number of the cast and crew felt it was their “responsibility” to give viewers some normality following the coronavirus pandemic.
Stephen previously said: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the number of people who have contacted us just at their relief that something was still going to be the same. And I think as actors we underestimated that and it was humbling.”
