OHMYGOSSIP — Maisie Smith topped the ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ leaderboard with a near-perfect score of 59 out of 60 in tonight’s (12.12.20) semi-final.
The ‘EastEnders’ star – who plays Tiffany Butcher on the BBC One soap – and her professional dance partner Gorka Marquez first wowed the judges with a “flawless” Couple’s Choice routine to ‘Getting’ Jiggy Wit It’ by Will Smith, which earned them a 10 from each judge, with hard-to-please Craig Revel Horwood declaring: “Well, I’ve been waiting all series for that – thank you.”
Head judge Shirley Ballas gushed: “Queen of pop. So cool! Effortless, just flawless, just spectacular. Will go down in history as one of the best numbers I’ve seen.”
Next up, the pair pulled out all the stops with a graceful Viennese Waltz and Motsi Mabuse admitted, if it was up to her, she would put them straight through to the final next week.
She said: “If it was up to me, that was the dance that should put you in the final.”
In agreement, Shirley hailed the 19-year-old actress’ body as “a musical instrument”.
She said: “Your body has become a musical instrument. That is one of the most beautiful Viennese Waltz’s I’ve seen.”
And they nearly scored another perfect score, with both Motsi and Shirley giving the performance a 10, while Craig gave it a nine.
Elsewhere, ‘Made in Chelsea’ star Jamie Laing and Karen Hauer scored eight’s across the board with both their Salsa and Quickstep.
Shirley and Craig hailed the Salsa “joyous” to watch.
She said: “Thank you for opening our semi-finals with such a joyous performance.
“It’s evident that you don’t want to go home that is all I can say.
“You give it 100 per cent.”
Jamie also teared up as his dead appeared via video message to say how “proud” he is of his son.
‘Good Morning Britain’ presenter Ranvir Singh and her partner Giovanni Pernice,, meanwhile, were hailed for their stunning Waltz to Josh Groban’s ‘Un Giorno Per Noi’.
Motsi said: “There is something so beautiful about watching you dance.”
Craig gave the routine an eight and though he found the footwork “ropey”, he said Ranvir’s top line was “exquisite”.
He said: “The footwork was a little bit ropey for my taste. I think the dress covered a multitude of sins. But the beauty about it is that you maintained body contact throughout. Your top line was exquisite, It was simple, it was effective, it was graceful, gorgeous!
Both Motsi and Shirley pulled out their number nine paddle boards.
However, when it came to their Jive to Christina Aguilera’s ‘Candyman’, the judges were less generous with their scores, with Craig giving it a five, Shirley a six and Motsi, seven.
Bill Bailey performed one of the most-anticipated routines of the night, a Tango to Metallica’s ‘Enter Sandman’, and Shirley couldn’t stop smiling as she declared herself a heavy metal fan.
Although she only awarded the 55-year-old comedian and Oti Mabuse’s dance a seven, she said: “A 12 for attitude and choice of music. [It] failed a little bit for me. But I love heavy metal!”
Both Craig and Motsi gave them an eight.
The former said: “I just love watching you dance.”
And finally, pop star Hrvy performed a Rumba and Charleston to ‘Only You’ by Kylie Minogue and James Corden and ‘Another Day of Sun’ by the cast of ‘La La Land, respectively.
The second dance earned the 21-year-old singer a perfect score of 30, with Craig hailing it “f-a-b-u-l-o-u-s”.
However, Hrvy had the judges all agreeing that he could have done with more continuous movement with the transitions between each movement during his Rumba – though all agreed that the the “connection” between him and partner Janette Manrara was incredible.
