OHMYGOSSIP — Tommy Cannon had no idea Bobby Ball was so ill before his death.
Tommy’s Cannon and Ball comedy partner Bobby, 76, passed away this week from Covid-19 and Tommy, 82, doesn’t think he’ll ever get over losing his friend and workmate of 57 years.
In a tearful interview on ITV’s ‘This Morning’, he said: “To be honest, I didn’t really know he was unwell. We last worked on the 9th of October and he seemed ok. I didn’t know anything was wrong really. And then he was taken into hospital and that’s where he stayed. There were all sorts of things happening. He was getting a little better and I don’t know, suddenly he just passed away.
“His lovely wife got a phone call and that was it. It was so quick. It’s an awful time, at this moment in time, I don’t know where I am. I can’t believe he’s passed away, I can’t make any sense of it. I miss him terribly, I love him to bits. I have great memories to look back on and I’ll meet him again.”
When asked by host Eamonn Holmes if he feels a part of him has died along with Bobby, he said: “Oh yeah, a big chunk of me has gone. I don’t think I’ll ever get over it. After 57 years working together, starting in the pubs and then nightclubs, it worked out for us. But it took 15 years before we got on to TV.”
However, Tommy is taking some comfort in the thought that Bobby is living it large in heaven with his fellow comedy greats.
Tommy said: “Now he’s at rest. He’ll be up there with all his pals, Eddie Large, Bernard Manning, Eric Sykes, all the greats. He’ll be up there with them and he’ll be shining like a light.”
Tommy and Bobby last performed together three weeks ago in Blackpool, on the same bill as Bobby’s sons Robert and Darren, a comedy duo known as The Harper Brothers, and Tommy admitted his pal was competitive to the end.
He said: “We’ve performed together quite a few times, I love the boys to bits and when they were getting their laughs, he’d come up to them and say ‘hey, you’re not gonna better bigger laughs than us you know’.”
