OHMYGOSSIP — Bobby Ball’s sons are “shell-shocked” by his death.
The 76-year-old TV legend, who is best known for being one half of the comedy double act Cannon and Ball – alongside Tommy Cannon – passed away at Blackpool Victoria Hospital earlier this week, after being diagnosed with Covid-19.
And his sons Darren and Robert revealed his death came as a massive shock because their father was laughing and joking with the nurses before his sudden decline.
Speaking on ‘Good Morning Britain’, Robert said: “He had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and went to hospital with a chest infection, then tested positive for coronavirus and it was awful.”
Darren continued: “You never expect one of your family to get it, we’re shell-shocked really. Completely shell-shocked.
“I was FaceTiming him three times a day when he was in hospital and before he took a decline he was laughing and joking with the nurses.
“He was being his usual self, getting the nurses in and telling us ‘have you met your new mother?’ Unfortunately he declined and went in the wrong direction.”
The pair added that their father was “like a cartoon” and “completely full of mischief” in his personal life and was the same on and off the stage.
Robert and Darren are also comedians, known as The Harper Brothers, and last shared the stage with their father just three weeks ago in Blackpool.
Darren said: “He was up to his old tricks again. We went on stage hoping to get a laugh and Cannon and Ball went on after and got a bigger laugh. He came backstage and said ‘that’s how you get laughs, lads’.
“He came to watch us perform many times and I said, ‘how was the gig?’ and he said: ‘you’ve a lot to learn lads’.”
“Whenever we worked with them, he’d always be in the wings watching but he’d always want the biggest laugh. If he didn’t get it, he’d end up sulking.”
Bobby’s death was announced in a statement by his manager earlier this week, who said: “It is with great personal sadness that on behalf of Yvonne Ball, and the family, and Tommy Cannon, I announce that Bobby Ball passed away at Blackpool Victoria Hospital on the 28th October 2020 approximately 21:30.
“Bobby had been taken to the hospital for tests as he started with breathing problems. At first it was thought to be a chest infection, but a test proved positive for Covid-19.
“His wife Yvonne said the hospital and staff could not have been more wonderful, as they were outstanding in their care of duty and they did everything possible for him and she cannot praise them enough.”
Tommy added: “Rock on, my good friend, I can’t believe this, I’m devastated.”
