OHMYGOSSIP — Sir David Jason’s career was nearly ended by a sugar cube.
The ‘Only Fools and Horses’ star recalled how he was once nearly knocked out by a wayward giant sugar cube prop whilst filming an advert for PG Tips in the 1970s.
He said: “Well that nearly ended my career that. Because they had the props guys up on a gantry throwing those giant sugar cubes down onto me, or into the tea cup as it were. The first few times we did it, it wasn’t heavy enough because it wouldn’t sink so you had this sugar lump that came in and sat there for a minute or two and then went down so it didn’t look like a sugar cube. So the director said, ‘Make it heavier, make it heavier’. Well eventually, it took four prop boys to lift the sugar cube like this and then they would drop it. Well it passed and touched my nose as it went through the tea cup. Well that very nearly, had it hit my head, it would have been ‘David Jason killed by a sugar cube’, which wouldn’t make a very good advert.'”
David recalls this incident in his new book, ‘A Del of a Life’, which shares little anecdotes about his life and “things he’s learned over the years”, including when he nearly choked on a grapefruit pip.
Speaking on ITV’s This Morning, he added: “When I was asked, would I be able to write another book? I said, I’ve said everything I was going to say before and I have nothing left to say. So they said, you could make it anecdotal, things you’ve learned over the years, little tips that people have told you. So I thought, yes OK. So I sat down and I thought where do I start and I thought, I used to have breakfast in my little flat in London and the fashion at the time in the 60s was that you had to start your breakfast with half a grapefruit. It was very trendy to do; we were all eating healthy. I won’t tell you the whole story because you can read it in the book but I nearly choked on this pip. I looked at the pip and the pip looked at me. And I thought that’s an unusual story and unusual way to start a book.”
