OHMYGOSSIP — Toby Jones is to star in a new BBC Two drama, ‘Danny Boy’.
The 54-year-old actor and co-star Anthony Boyle have started work on the new feature-length production, which tells the story of a young man’s journey from war hero to alleged murderer.
Toby – who plays human rights lawyer Phil Shiner – said: “Robert [Jones] has written an extraordinarily compelling, intelligent and nuanced script, and it’s a real honour to be working with Danny Boy’s exceptional cast and creative team to bring it to the screen.”
Anthony, 26, stars as real-life soldier Brian Wood – who was wrongly accused of committing war crimes while serving in Iraq – in the production.
The actor is excited to have joined the thought-provoking drama, which centres on one of Britain’s biggest-ever public inquiries, the Al-Sweady Inquiry.
He said: “I’m thrilled to be working with [director] Sam Miller on Robert Jones’ phenomenal script, and telling Brian’s extraordinary story. We get to explore not just the realities of war, but how they can come back to haunt you.”
The former soldier was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry in the Battle of Danny Boy, but after returning from Iraq in 2004, he was subjected to allegations of having committed war crimes.
However, following an inquiry, it was determined that Wood and his regiment had instead been the victims of “deliberate lies”.
Sam Miller thinks the real-life story will make for a compelling drama.
The director said: “The film is a candid and subtle delve into a troubled sequence in recent history that sets up an undertow threatening all those involved. The intimate questions raised about the nature of soldiering and the political ramifications are never more prescient.”
