OHMYGOSSIP — Liz Carr has discovered one of her ancestors was involved in an attempted murder.
The 48-year-old actress learned how Barney Ryan plotted to kill a wealthy landowner in a battle against farmers’ rights in the 1850s.
Speaking in an episode of ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’, Liz said: “This person was about changing the living conditions for a whole group of people.
“I strongly believe that if you can do something, use your voice and what you have to change things for the better, then you should. That’s what they did.”
In December 1851, landowner Meredith Chambre received a death threat before he was attacked a month later when a group of men jumped out at his home and fired shots at him.
Chambre survived the attack but a man named Francis Berry was executed for the crime.
Before his death, Berry named Barney as the leader of the farmers fighting for their rights and at the centre of the plot.
Although the ‘Silent Witness’ star doesn’t agree with his actions, she is happy to know that her family sought out justice for others.
She said: “The fact that somebody dies as a consequence of, by all accounts, Barney Ryan’s actions, isn’t something that I would celebrate or condone – that’s different.
“I guess he was like a vigilante who was pursuing justice for himself and the other tenant farmers.”
What’s more, Liz hopes she can follow in Barney’s footsteps and leave a legacy of her own as people from his village still remember his name.
She added: “People still know his name in the village where he grew up.
“I hope in 150 years someone will still be remembering and talking about things that I’ve done! I guess that’s what we all want. We all want a legacy.”
