Corrie star Katherine Kelly leaves the Street for role in National Theatre play

Corrie favourite Becky McDonald is quitting the cobbles – to tread the boards in a posh National Theatre play. Viewers will see her flee the Street in the New Year after screen hubby Steve gets Tracy Barlow pregnant, Mirror mediates.

Becky, played by actress Katherine Kelly, 31, was cheered by the cast after revealing she had landed the leading lady role in classic comedy She Stoops To Conquer in London.

She burst on to our screens in 2006 as druggie ex-con Becky. A show insider said: “She is such a lovely girl who is going to be sorely missed.”

Meanwhile, charmer Nigel Havers, 59, will make a dramatic return after a year as conman Lewis Archer.

A source said: “Having Lewis back will set pulses racing, and there is bound to be trouble in store.”
