OHMYGOSSIP — ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here’ bosses nearly didn’t give the contestants a toilet on the show.
Ian Hamilton, the programme’s original producer, has opened up about some of the initial thoughts when the programme – co-hosted by Ant and Dec – first started in 2002, and they included going without a dunny so that the stars would have to do their business in the Australian jungle.
He said: “The original plan called for no lav. The idea was that they’d go off into the bush, 100 yards away and do their thing.
“It would have been quite edgy.”
However, their plan was squashed by the local authorities who had concerns about what it would do to the community.
Speaking on the ‘Behind the Scenes with Colin Edmonds’ podcast, Ian said: “But the Australians said, ‘No you can’t do that because whatever they do in the bush might get into the water supply.’
“So the only reason to this day that there is a lavatory is because we weren’t allowed to do that back in 2002.”
Cleaning the dunny is a dreaded task for the campmates for obvious reasons, so they tend to take it in turns to empty it out.
The bathroom set up remains a feature on the show – even after the show had to film in Wales due to COVID last year.
To really make the celebrities, such as winner Giovanna Fletcher, Sir Mo Farah and Vernon Kay, suffer, they placed the loo outside at Gwrych Castle so they felt the freezing cold while offloading during the night.
Production will be back there in Conwy this year, and several stars have been linked to the show including ‘EastEnders’ actor Adam Woodyatt, former ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ judge Arlene Phillips, TV presenter Richard Madeley, and singer Frankie Bridge.
Over the summer, the ‘I’m A Celeb’ team let visitors have a look around the castle for £5 a ticket.
They wrote on Instagram: “The most famous toilet in the UK is now available to see at Gwrych Castle! I bet this will bring back memories for the cast of 2020’s I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!”
