OHMYGOSSIP — Stephen Fry thinks ‘EastEnders’ “isn’t as funny” as ‘Coronation Street’.
The ‘It’s A Sin’ star has taken a pop at the BBC One soap, insisting it “fails so often” at not being as amusing as real life, or its ITV rival.
He said: “The joke about ‘EastEnders’ is, ‘It’s very true to life.’
“But actually where it fails so often, unlike ‘Coronation Street’, is that it isn’t as funny.
“People are, whatever their situation, usually joking.”
The 63-year-old star suggested ‘EastEnders’ could feature some more “basic sarcasm” in scenes.
Speaking on podcast ‘My Seven Wonders with Clive Anderson’, he added: “You look at a market in the East End of London or Huddersfield or Edinburgh, there’s usually people joking with each other.
“Even if it’s a cheap silly joke about the weather being lovely when it’s raining, you know, a very basic piece of sarcasm.”
Stephen’s comments come after Shaun Williamson – who played Barry Evans in the soap from 1994 to 2004 – admitted ‘EastEnders’ was “dark” back in his day, whereas ‘Corrie’ has “always got great comedy double acts”.
Speaking in December, he said: “Don’t get me wrong I’m a massive fan of it, the stories are brilliant, I love the story between Mick and Stuart – it was fantastic.
“I watch all the soaps, I watch ‘Emmerdale’ and ‘Coronation Street’ and I love the way that they still put in lots of comedy.
“They’ve always got great comedy double acts in ‘Coronation Street’, they always have, and I think it’s important.
“‘EastEnders’ was dark back then but being one of the comic interests did make Barry very popular, and you had Dot Cotton, Dean Gaffney as Robbie, who were given all the comedy, so I felt very blessed to be given that.
“Towards the end it was downhill – well down a cliff – very fast for Barry … get the comedy back in and build the audience back up.”
