OHMYGOSSIP — Jay Blades is to host a new Channel 5 series called ‘The Streets Where I Lived’.
The 51-year-old presenter, who has presented BBC One show ‘The Repair Shop’ since 2017, is making the three-part documentary about his tough upbringing in Hackney, East London, and says he’s looking forward to returning to his old stomping ground.
He said: “I can’t wait to go back to my old neighbourhood and discover the history on its doorstep.
“The places I visit are the buildings, streets, and communities that made me the man I am today.”
Jay also hopes his success as a presenter on a primetime BBC show can convince others they can do the same.
He said: “If someone like me, who grew up in Hackney with no training can front a hit BBC1 show, so can others.”
Jay isn’t the only celebrity to have gone from the BBC to Channel 5 recently.
‘DIY SOS’ host Nick Knowles announced in March he would be making two series for the channel.
What’s more, ‘Pointless’ presenter Alexander Armstrong signed up to front a three-part travel series, and BBC Radio 2 presenter Jeremy Vine took over from outgoing host Matthew Wright on his Channel 5 morning show three years ago.
Last year, Jay spoke of his shock at discovering he has 25 siblings as a result of the behaviour of his womanising father.
The star, who grew up with mum Barbara and half-brother Justin, first met his dad Trevor when he was 21 and couldn’t believe it when he realised how many siblings he actually has.
He said: “He (his father) told me I had four other siblings but I then found out that wasn’t true at all. I have 25 in total, including six in America, two in Africa and three in Jamaica. I’ve met 11 of them and I am really close to my half-sister, Sophie.”
