OHMYGOSSIP — David Neilson says his ‘Coronation Street’ co-star Mollie Gallagher’s “phenomenal” performances make him work harder.
The 72-year-old actor – who plays Roy Cropper on the ITV soap – admits he is in awe of Mollie’s incredible performance as Nina Lucas and quipped that whenever he sees her act, he knows he needs to “pull his finger out”.
He told TV Times magazine: “She came straight out of drama school into this show, and then she was hit with this huge story, and I wondered how she was going to be with it. But she is just phenomenal. She’s interested in everything that goes on on set – ‘Where’s that camera? What’s that doing?’ – but not in a selfish way. And her performance is very nuanced; she gives a huge amount and I don’t have to do a lot, other than just look at her. And then I suddenly thing, ‘I’d better pull my finger out!'”
Meanwhile, Mollie previously admitted she feels “proud” of the role she’s played in ‘Coronation Street’s hate crime storyline and she thinks it is important to bring issues like this to the public’s attention.
She shared: “It’ something that I do find quite hard. I absolutely love playing these characters and I absolutely love playing Nina and I do get really attached to her. And because the storyline is very important and I’m really attached to her … I’ve put so much effort into it and hopefully that shows.”
The heartbreaking storyline is loosely based on the real-life death of Sophie Lancaster, who was murdered in 2007.
Mollie actually spoke to Sophie’s mum Sylvia about the issue before she took on the storyline.
She added: “I’ve had Zooms with Sylvia who is absolutely amazing and completely inspiring. She did a presentation with us and any advice that we needed she was there.
“A lot of the research we got was from Sylvia, as well as finding stuff online … learning about hate crime in general, so yeah, I’m really grateful.”
