OHMYGOSSIP — David Neilson feels “doubly fortunate” to be in ‘Coronation Street’ after some of his actor pals had it “really tough lately”.
The Roy Cropper actor thinks part of the reason he has been on the cobbles since 1995 is down to “a lot of luck”, and while he has always felt blessed to be a ‘Corrie’ star, he feels even more fortunate to have regular work amid the coronavirus pandemic because it has been hard for many others in the industry.
He said: “What has kept me? The time has flown, and I have worked with some really good people, many of whom have gone on to other things.
“And I’m 72, so probably a lot of it is luck. I enjoy it.
“People say, ‘You’re playing the same thing,’ but it’s not the same thing at all – they’re different characters with the name ‘Roy Cropper’.
“It’s a very comfortable pair of slippers, I tell you.
“I have mates who are actors who have had it really tough lately. I’ve always felt fortunate, and I feel double fortunate now.”
The 72-year-old star believes Roy has turned into fellow cobbles resident Rita Sullivan (Barbara Knox) – who has been a regular character since 1972 – after 26 years in Weatherfield, despite him initially coming into the show as “a real loner and oddball”.
He added to TV Times magazine: “He has changed over the years.
“At first, he was this strange guy stalking Deirdre and a real loner and oddball. But nowadays, he’s become this font of all wisdom.
“He’s turned into Rita.”
