OHMYGOSSIP — Jed Mercurio has defended the ‘Line of Duty’ finale after a number of viewers were left disappointed.
The police procedural drama’s creator has admitted that while Sunday night’s (02.05.21) series six concluding episode “divided social media opinion”, he has found a “a far less extreme picture” when taking in the audience research.
He wrote on Twitter: “1. No one disputes the Line of Duty finale divided social media opinion but the audience research so far shows a far less extreme picture. We knew a “down” ending would rate less favourably with some viewers, however all 7 episodes varied by under 10% on average viewer score …
“2. The research determines the episode ratings based on randomly polling viewers, rather than sites like imdb where scores can be skewed by users strongly motivated to register their immediate anger/adulation …
“3. 1000 random viewers submitted scores from 1-10 which have been used to calculate the Appreciation Index (AI) as a score out of 100. The AI for the “down” finale was only 7 points below the next lowest in Season 6 (Ep 1) …
“4/4 These figures won’t stop the debate, of course, nor should they – that’s still all part of the experience of shared TV viewing. Thanks again for watching. (sic)”
Jed’s comments come as some branded the finale “dull” and claimed it “lacked drama”, after Nigel Boyle’s bumbling cop character Detective Superintendent Ian Buckells was unveiled as the elusive H, The Fourth Man.
However, others insisted Buckells being H made “perfect sense” and called for a seventh series of the show.
While many didn’t appear to guess the identity of H, Jed has since revealed he dropped a huge clue that it was Buckells back in 2012’s first series.
Speaking on the ‘Obsessed With Line of Duty’ podcast, he said: “It was always really important to me that it was someone who had been in season one, someone who had been there the whole time.
“We did introduce some characters late, so Thurwell came in late, we went back to Fairbank, who’d appeared in season three, we had the Chief Constable, who had obviously been there since season one.
“But then I don’t think he would have been a satisfying candidate because he had been absent for so long, it would feel like we’d just brought him back in to pin it on him.”
A record 12.8 million viewers tuned in to see Buckells revealed as H, and the BBC has said it was the most-watched episode of any drama – excluding soaps – since modern records began in 2002.
