OHMYGOSSIP — Munroe Bergdorf wants to be the first ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ transgender contestant.
The 33-year-old model is hoping to make TV history as the BBC Latin and ballroom competition’s first transgender star but wants to achieve her goals before stepping into reality shows.
Speaking on the ‘Make It Reign’ podcast, she said: “I’ve always said that ‘Strictly’ is the only one that I’ve got a desire to do. I’ve got a plan. I want to get everything done that I want to achieve, then I can start doing those shows. It’s really exciting.
“I kind of feel that once you’re part of a reality TV show the general public starts shaping your narrative in a way that’s much more difficult for you to shape. So I don’t necessarily want to become public property in that way just yet.”
Last year, the programme featured its first same-sex pairing as boxer Nicola Adams competed alongside pro partner Katya Jones.
Munroe’s comments come after Chris Witty is reportedly being lined up to take part in the upcoming series and show bosses are also considering his deputy Jonathan Van-Tam – who was previously backed for ‘Strictly’ by pro dancer Janette Manrara – and Kate Bingham, chair of the UK vaccine taskforce.
A show insider said: “Eighteen months ago Chris Whitty, Jonathan Van-Tam and Kate Bingham were utter unknowns. “Today they’re practically household names. After all the doom and gloom of Covid, it would be brilliant viewing to get one of these three out of their suits and into some sparkles. “Chris is top of the list, and discreet enquiries will be made over the next few weeks.”
‘Strictly’ bosses were also thought to be considering the possibility of signing up Health Secretary Matt Hancock, but such a move has been shelved due to his “hectic schedule”.
The insider added: “Unfortunately it’s been made clear Matt Hancock’s hectic schedule won’t allow for a weekly waltz – so he’s been ruled out.”
