US president Barack Obama for review of military assets deployed in Iraq

OHMYGOSSIP — President Barack Obama Tuesday underlined the need to review America’s military asset deployment in Iraq hours after Baghdad announced a new offensive in its battle against the growing expansion of Islamic State militants who recently captured key cities in Iraq and Syria.

Obama met with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg in the Oval Office. The president underscored the US partnership with its NATO allies and other countries in the fight against the Islamic State group.

“NATO is necessarily recognizing a whole range of global challenges, particularly on what we call the Southern Front. And we are working closely with NATO allies to make sure that we are partnering with other countries to address issues of counterterrorism; making sure that we continue to coordinate effectively in the fight against ISIL,” Obama told reporters after the meeting with Stoltenberg, referring to Islamic State with its earlier acronym.

He noted “all 28 NATO members are members of the coalition to support the Iraqi government against the ISIL fight”.

The militant group that gained the control of Ramadi in Iraq earlier this month displayed its military capabilities to advance in both Syria and Iraq despite months of US-led airstrikes.

Obama said that the US needs to rethink if military assets have been deployed properly in Iraq.

He said that the US has to increase “defense capacity-building with other countries like Iraq or GCC countries that are interested in working with us”.

“It also means that we have to think about whether we are deploying and arranging our assets effectively to meet that goal.”

The comments came hours after the Iraqi government said it has launched an operation to retake the western province of Anbar from Islamic State militants.

Iraqi troops and pro-government militias have been gathering east of the Ramadi city, preparing for an offensive to reclaim the largely Sunni province.

Meanwhile, the White House said that it was responding to demands by Iraqi fighters for more powerful anti-tank weapons to confront armored vehicles that the Islamic State has used as potent and deadly car bombs.

The US military also said that it would provide about 2,000 anti-tank rockets to Iraq “within the next week” to help it fight the Islamic State group.

It also said the US-led coalition has carried out over 4,100 airstrikes in Iraq and Syria since the beginning of its campaign in August.
